Republic Day 26 January, is a national holiday in India. On this day, the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950 and India became a full republic from a country under British rule.

India became independent on 15 August 1947, but did not have a permanent constitution; instead, a revised colonial law, based on the Government of India Act 1935, was in force, and the country was considered a British dominion under King George V, with Lord Mountbatten as the head of state, the Governor General. On 29 August 1947, a Drafting Committee was formed under the chairmanship of Dr. Ambedkar to draft a permanent constitution. The committee prepared a draft constitution and presented it to the Constituent Assembly on 4 November 1947. Before adopting the constitution, the Constituent Assembly held a public session of 166 days, which lasted 2 years, 11 months and 18 days. After much deliberation and revision, the 308-member Constituent Assembly signed two handwritten copies of these documents in Hindi and English on January 24, 1950. Two days later, the Constitution of India became the law of the land. The Constitution of India came into force on January 26, 1950.

According to Grenville Austin, a scholar of the Indian Constitution, the draft of the Indian Constitution prepared by Dr. Ambedkar is "the first and foremost social document". "Most of the provisions of the Constitution are designed either to directly advance the aim of social revolution or to create the conditions necessary for bringing about this aim."
26 January 1950 is a very important day in the history of India. On this day, the Constitution of India came into effect and India truly became an independent nation. On this day, India became a full democracy. The country saw the dream of an independent nation of Mahatma Gandhi and thousands of freedom fighters who sacrificed their all for freedom come true. Since then, 26 January is considered a national holiday and is celebrated as Republic Day.
