Beware of those who put caste and religion stickers on vehicles!


Whenever you go out on the streets. Then you must have seen many different types of vehicles. You must have seen different types of number plates of these vehicles. Lakhs and crores of rupees are spent to get the number. So many people get the number plate of their vehicle made in a fancy way. Instead of showing the number, it looks like a name plate.

Beware of those who put caste and religion stickers on vehicles!

Noida and Ghaziabad police have fined 2300 vehicles in the last few days for pasting stickers indicating caste and religion. The police are running a special campaign against such stickers. According to the police, there is a fine of Rs 1000 for pasting any type of sticker on the glass or body of vehicles. So, there is a provision of Rs 5000 for pasting a sticker on the registration or number plate.

What does the law say?

The Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 clearly states that no person can paste any type of sticker or label on the registration or number plate of a vehicle. It falls under the ambit of an offence. The Motor Vehicle Rules state that, “No type of sticker or label is allowed to be pasted on the number plate of a vehicle”.

The Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 also provide detailed guidelines regarding the number plates of vehicles. According to this, the number plate should be solid and should be made of at least 1 MM aluminum. It is mandatory to have IND written in blue letters in large letters on the left side of the number plate.

Provision for how many invoices?

According to Section 192 of the Motor Vehicle Act, if the number plate of the vehicle is not found correct or any type of sticker is found pasted on it, then for the first time, a challan of up to Rs 5000 can be issued. After this, if the driver repeats the offence again, there is a provision of imprisonment up to 1 year and a fine up to Rs 10,000.

Now, if we talk about stickers on the glass or body part of the vehicle, the traffic police can issue a challan under Section 179 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. This section says, “If the driver does not comply with the necessary directions or information issued by the security agencies, he may be fined”.

Let us tell you that earlier there was a provision of a fine of up to Rs 500 under this section. But after the amendment in the Motor Vehicle Act in the year 2019, the fine was increased to Rs 2000.

Various guidelines of states

Various states also issue guidelines from time to time for stickers or labels showing caste, religion and rank on vehicles. Talking about Uttar Pradesh, the Uttar Pradesh Traffic Directorate had issued an order on August 10 saying that a special drive will be started against those who put caste-religion stickers on vehicles between August 11 and 20. In this episode, fines are being deducted. Let us tell you that in Gujarat, such a drive has not been done by the police so far.
