Every day there are discussions on social media about something or the other. In recent times, there has been a debate about whether figs are a carnivorous fruit or a vegetarian. Behind this debate is the claim by many that it is not suitable for vegetarianism because it is grown by an insect, which then dies inside it.
Figs are popular in West Asia and India, where they are eaten as a dried fruit. These are supposed to be fruits but are actually inverted flowers with petals hidden inside them. But the biggest source of ongoing debate is an insect called the fig, which produces an enzyme inside the fig fruit, leading many to consider it a carnivorous fruit.
Why are figs non-veg?
In fact, wasps play an important role in the development of this fruit. The fruit begins to grow as an inverted flower, in which the female wasp moves inside the fruit to lay her eggs. While laying the eggs, the wasp's wings and some small parts break off and remain inside the fruit. After this, the fig begins to grow with those parts of the wasp, the fruit absorbs the part into itself. This entire process makes this fruit considered carnivorous. Figs produce a special enzyme called ficin to absorb wasp parts. Wasp eggs hatch inside the fruit. However, when we eat this fruit, the wasps disappear completely.
What do the experts say?
Figs should be considered carnivorous only because insects are involved in their growth. This does not mean that figs or any other fruit are carnivorous. It is only the life cycle of growth and development of the plant that helps it to reproduce and grow. According to a report in India Today, Vihan Dixit, a nutritionist, explains that wasps are helpful in producing figs but the fruit does not have any animal mating or relationship, which would put it in the purely carnivorous category. Apart from this, experts have also said that vegetarians can eat this fruit without any worries.

This approach can be considered a more vegan-friendly option. However, many people in the Jain and Brahmin community still avoid eating figs because it is a bit difficult to convince them that not all figs are pollinated by insects.
