Health News: People use different energy drinks available in the market to boost body energy in the heat, but a recent research has given a bang and found that these drinks can cause deadly diseases. This drink is high in sugar and caffeine. Doctors say this can lead to serious problems like heart attack, which needs immediate treatment.
A cup of coffee contains 100mg of caffeine, while energy drinks contain 80mg to 300mg of caffeine. It also contains ingredients like taurine and guarana, which affect heart rate, blood pressure and other heart functions.
Data were collected from 144 patients
Researchers from the American Mayo Clinic studied the data of 144 patients who survived a heart attack. Out of which 7 people (age 20 to 42 years) had consumed an energy drink shortly before the incident. Out of which six people required electric shock for treatment and one required CPR.
Expert Statement
Peter Schwartz of the Center for Cardiac Arrhythmias of Genetic Origin and Laboratory of Cardiovascular Genetics in Milan, Italy, wrote in his report that some might argue that this is just a coincidence. Both we and the Mayo Clinic know that energy drinks are not yet clearly proven to cause serious heart disease, but more research is needed.
How do caffeine and sugar in energy drinks affect the body?
London's Fleet Street Clinic Dr. Belinda Griffiths says caffeine increases the heart rate, stimulates the brain and prevents sleepiness. Small amounts of caffeine can also be beneficial for adults. Studies show that 2 or more cups of coffee a day (depending on caffeine content) may be beneficial for heart disease. But, refined sugar in the amounts found in energy drinks is not at all healthy. Griffiths says we should avoid this. We get enough sugar from food and drink. It causes blood sugar to rise, provide energy for a short period of time and then suddenly drop, which can lead to mood swings and increased appetite.

London-based nutritionist Benny Robinson advises ditching energy drinks and drinking fizzy water instead. He says that we should not depend on energy drinks for energy. I advise people to drink filtered water - this is what really gives us energy. Consuming too much energy drinks introduces caffeine, artificial flavors and sweeteners into the body, which can affect our energy and gut.
